Emotional Support for Parents of Kids with Eczema

How EFT Tapping Can Help You Heal Too

If anyone needs emotional support, it’s the parents of kids with eczema. Parenting a child with eczema is not for the faint of heart. Between the sleepless nights, the relentless itch-scratch cycle, and the constant second-guessing of every product and food, it can feel like you’re living in survival mode. Add the guilt, frustration, and emotional exhaustion, and it’s no wonder so many caregivers feel completely overwhelmed.

If that sounds like you, you’re not alone. And more importantly, there is support. Not just for your child’s skin, but for your heart and nervous system, too. Today, we’re diving into a powerful, free, and surprisingly simple tool called EFT tapping — and how it can provide true emotional support for parents of kids with eczema.

Why Parents Need Emotional Support Too

If you’re here, you’re probably doing all the things: buying organic, avoiding triggers, soaking and sprouting beans, tracking flare-ups, and maybe even working through our Natural Eczema Solutions course. But here’s the truth: healing isn’t just physical. It’s emotional, too.

We share a nervous system with our kids when they’re young, and an energetic ecosystem with them as they grow. Your stress becomes their stress. Your calm becomes their calm. So if you want to support their healing, the first place to start is with you.

“Your stress becomes their stress. Your calm becomes their calm.” -Sweta Khanal, EFT Practitioner

What Is EFT Tapping?

EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Technique. It’s a self-help method that combines acupressure (tapping on specific meridian points on the body) with affirmations and focused awareness.

You use your fingertips to tap on points on the head, face, and upper body while acknowledging a specific stressor or emotion. This process sends a calming signal to your brain (especially the amygdala), lowers cortisol levels, and helps rewire your nervous system for resilience.

How EFT Helped This Mama Heal

Sweta Khanal, a clinical EFT practitioner and mom of two kids with eczema, joined us on the Eczema Kids Podcast to share how tapping helped her get through the darkest parts of her family’s healing journey.

“It’s not just about which lotion to use or what diet to follow,” she said. “It’s about being in a calmer state where you can absorb information, make decisions, and not feel completely shattered when someone asks, ‘What’s wrong with your child’s skin?'”

Sweta’s insight? We don’t need to eliminate emotions. We need to move through them. EFT tapping allows us to do exactly that.

The Science Behind Tapping for Emotional Support

Tapping has been studied extensively and shown to lower cortisol (the body’s stress hormone), calm the amygdala, and regulate the nervous system. It’s even been shown to reduce PTSD symptoms in clinical settings.

By tapping, you’re essentially interrupting the fight-or-flight response and telling your body, “It’s safe to calm down.” From this grounded state, you can better support your child, make nourishing decisions, and actually feel like yourself again.

Tapping Points: A Quick Guide

Here are the basic EFT tapping points Sweta shared on the podcast:

Underarm (bra strap area)

Side of the hand (karate chop point)

Top of the head

Eyebrow point (where the brow begins)

Side of the eye

Under the eye

Under the nose

Chin (under lower lip)

Collarbone (just below it)

Start by tapping the side of your hand and saying a setup statement like:

“Even though I feel completely overwhelmed, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”

Then move through the other points, breathing deeply and allowing emotions to surface and release.

When and How to Use EFT for Emotional Support for Parents

In the morning to start your day grounded

During or after a flare-up to reset emotionally

Before bed to release the day’s stress

Anytime you feel guilty, scared, sad, or stuck

It’s free, it’s portable, and it’s profoundly effective. Five minutes can change your entire day.

Can You Tap For Your Child?

Yes, especially for young children. For kids under seven, calming your nervous system will naturally regulate theirs. That means just by doing EFT on yourself, you’re already helping them.

For older kids, you can teach them the sequence or even do it together. Many teens feel self-conscious about their skin and experience anxiety or low confidence. Tapping can help them process those emotions and reclaim some control.

You can also try surrogate tapping, where you tap on yourself on behalf of your child. It’s especially helpful if your child is too young or too uncomfortable to participate directly.

What Emotional Detox Looks Like

Much like physical healing, emotional healing happens in layers. As you begin tapping, you may notice waves of sadness, frustration, fear, or old memories coming to the surface. That’s normal. That means it’s working.

Healing isn’t always linear. But over time, you’ll notice:

  • Fewer emotional outbursts
  • Less guilt and overwhelm
  • A greater sense of clarity and calm
  • And yes, better outcomes for your child too

Affirmations to Use While Tapping

After acknowledging the problem, you can shift into more empowering statements:

  • “I’m doing the best I can.”
  • “It’s okay to not have all the answers.”
  • “My child is healing, and so am I.”
  • “I release the guilt. I choose compassion.”
  • “I am creating a peaceful environment for my child.”

Remember: you can say these aloud, whisper them, or simply think them. The intention and the tapping work together.

EFT Tapping vs. Meditation

Both are powerful, but EFT is more active and immediate. It’s especially effective when you’re in the thick of it—when your toddler’s scratching, your baby isn’t sleeping, and you feel like you’re hanging by a thread.

You can tap while pacing, sitting, hiding in the bathroom (we’ve all been there), or during a meltdown moment. EFT meets you where you are.

Letting Go of Guilt, Shame, and the “What Ifs”

You didn’t cause your child’s eczema. But you can be the catalyst for their healing.

That starts with caring for yourself. And that doesn’t mean spa days or bubble baths. It means processing your emotions, regulating your nervous system, and creating the emotional foundation your child needs to thrive.

You don’t have to carry this alone. You’re not meant to.

FAQ

Can EFT tapping really make a difference in my child’s eczema?

While EFT doesn’t treat eczema directly, it supports the emotional and energetic environment your child is living in—which is hugely important. When parents are calmer and more emotionally regulated, it creates a ripple effect that supports their child’s healing on every level.

How often should I use EFT tapping?

As often as you need. Daily practice—even just 5 minutes—can be incredibly grounding. Tap in the morning, during stressful moments, or before bed. The key is consistency, not perfection.
